Peter Wenzel says he always knew that his company was destined for intense growth, even from the early days when General Data Company was based in the basement of his home. Today, 26 years later, the company is poised to do $50 million in sales and, in addition to its Clermont County headquarters, has sales and service centers in 15 Midwest communities and in Seattle, Washington, employing over 190 people.
General Data Company, headquartered at 4354 Ferguson Drive in Union Township, is recognized nationally and internationally as a premier provider of integrated bar code labeling, identification, and data collection products and services.
The business relocated to Clermont County from Pittsburgh in 1994. “Initially, I didn’t want to move here,” said Wenzel, the chief executive officer and president of General Data. “However, as I began to study the area and met with local leaders, I quickly determined that this area is a very attractive location for business. Moving here was one of the best business decisions I have made.”
Citing the close proximity to the airport, major interstates, and a large city, Wenzel says the benefits of running a business here are numerous. “We have a great workforce, affordable land, and the county is extremely helpful in working with business to help them stay and expand locally.”
Wenzel anticipates the business to show intense expansion in the healthcare market. “We manufacture wrist bands that include photographs of the patient, and in the case of the maternity ward, add a picture of the baby to serve as a security measure,” he said. “We are also recognized as the world’s leading authority in lab automation when it comes to tracking lab samples. We’ve developed a laser-based marker and a way of printing labels on slides that serves as another way to ensure patients receive accurate test results.”
When it comes to the future, Wenzel is optimistic. “I think that within the next 10 years, the size of our operation will grow to become a $150-200 million company,” he said. “In the beginning, grunt determination and hard work enabled us to succeed, today, I think it’s hiring great people, then standing back and letting them do what they do best.”
