On January 23, 2006, the Ford Motor Company announced that it is planning to close the Batavia Transmissions, LLC plant in Batavia Township. The plant is expected to be idled by the second quarter of 2008, resulting in the elimination of 1,745 positions. Batavia Transmissions is the largest employer in Clermont County and the impact on residents, the County, Township, and school district will be significant.
Despite the disheartening news, Clermont County will continue to pursue its plans for commercial and industrial development. "Clermont County is planning to work closely with Ford and state officials to market the Batavia Township site to other possible investors and provide assistance for dislocated workers," said Clermont County Administrator David Spinney. "We are optimistic that many new jobs will be created in the coming months and years, as a result of the County's aggressive economic development initiatives."
