The State of Ohio recently approved a grant for Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries to expand its Packaging Coatings business unit Headquarters and R&D facility in Miami Township. The local facility currently employs 55 people, but that will grow by at least ten with the proposed expansion. The project will also involve a renewal of the company's lease at its Park 50 facility along with the construction of additional laboratory space.
The Miami Township location is competing with other PPG locations in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin for this operation. The Office of Economic Development worked with the company to help it obtain assistance from the State of Ohio and the Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation. The State and local assistance obtained is vital to keep this investment in Clermont County. As State Senator Tom Niehaus commented, "Companies like PPG have been and continue to be important parts of our communities. Doing what we can to help expand their customer base and ensure longevity for the company not only benefits our local economy, but it also benefits local residents by providing new job opportunities."
The PPG facility in Miami Township is the headquarters for their Packaging Coatings business in the western hemisphere as well as the primary site for the research of coatings for various types of consumer packaging. The expansion will allow the company to potentially enter new packaging markets. The state assistance will be used for laboratory equipment and fabricating machinery to form packaging and test various coatings applications. The expansion represents a nearly $1 million investment in Miami Township.
